Christi Dog Track

Corpus Christi Dog Track, located at 5302 Leopard Street, Corpus Christi, TX, was once one of South Texas' prominent greyhound racing venues. The track was developed following a 1987 Texas referendum that approved pari-mutuel greyhound racing licenses in select counties, including Nueces County. Construction of the facility began in 1989 as part of a statewide expansion of regulated dog racing.

The racetrack officially opened to the public in 1991 and quickly gained popularity. During its early years, the Corpus Christi Dog Track attracted significant attendance, welcoming nearly one million visitors in its first full year of operation. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, the venue hosted live greyhound races, pari-mutuel wagering, and special racing events, becoming a well-known entertainment destination in the Corpus Christi area.

Despite early success, the track faced growing challenges over time. Increased competition from other forms of gambling, including the Texas Lottery and nearby casino gaming, led to declining attendance and reduced wagering revenue. Financial pressures intensified in the mid-2000s, with the operation reportedly losing millions of dollars annually.

In 2007, after the Texas Racing Commission denied a request to reduce the racing schedule, track ownership made the decision to discontinue live racing. The final live greyhound races were held on December 30, 2007, officially ending nearly two decades of live racing at the facility.

Following the closure of live racing, the property briefly operated under the name Gulf Coast Racing, offering simulcast wagering services. However, live greyhound racing has not returned to the Corpus Christi Greyhound Track since 2007.

Today, the site remains an important part of Corpus Christi racing history, representing both the rise and decline of greyhound racing in Texas. The track's story reflects broader industry trends that reshaped pari-mutuel racing across the state and the country.
